Regulating acid-base balance: Maintenance of pH around a relatively stable value
- Electrolyte concentrations
- Extracellular fluid volume and the regulation of blood pressure: Renin signals the hormones
angiotensin II and aldosterone act to increase the kidney's absorption of sodium chloride, thereby
expanding the extracellular fluid compartment and raising blood pressure
- Filtration, reabsorption, and secretion
- Excretion of wastes (inc nitrogenous wastes, urea and uric acid). Formation of urine
|
The kidneys secrete a variety of hormones, including erythropoietin, and the enzyme rennin, calcitriol,
(the activated form of vitamin D) which promote the intestinal absorption of calcium and the renal
reabsorption of phosphate. Part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, renin is an enzyme
involved in the regulation of aldosterone levels. |
-
Glucose. Pregnancy reduces the reabsorption of glucose.
- Amino acids Pregnancy reduces the reabsorption of amino acids.
